MRI (اختبار التصوير بالرنين المغناطيسي) commonly known as -Magnetic Resonance Imaging. A test that uses powerful magnets, radio waves, and obviously a computer to make and bring out detailed pictures of the inside of your body.
There are some safety tips prior to the procedure which will give a safe experience. Do not forget to address and ask the healthcare official all the precautions that can be taken while entering and going through an MRI. What to expect before an MRI exam?
- It is a general request to all the patients to arrive at least 30 minutes prior to your MRI Test and check-in with the receptionist and complete the MRI screening form. That is mandatory as the necessary precautions that are needed can be taken easily.
- As a safety precaution, One will be asked to change the outfit into the hospital gown. Generally, A locker is allotted so the necessities and your belongings can be secured. As your valuables like jewellery need to be removed prior to entering the scan room.
- A technologist usually will verify your documents and the screening form is usually verified or reviewed in consultation with the radiologist.
What to expect during an MRI exam?
- Usually the duration of the procedure will be from 45 minutes to one hour per body part.
- One is required to lie still during the actual MRI screening and hold up their breath for at least 30 seconds. Movement can result in obstruction while imaging the body parts.
- The part of the body which is being scanned is placed in the middle of the magnet. The magnet is permanently open on both the sides/ends. A two-way intercom system between the patient and technology is enabled.
- One is usually provided with earplugs/headphones to minimize the loud intermittent banging noise produced during the actual imaging.
- An alarm button is provided with the patient so that in case of any discontent technologist will come to know and will provide immediate aid to the patient.
- Very few MRI screening requires an injection of the intravenous MRI contrast. Informing the technologist would be the best option in case of any discomfort.

- Allergic reactions to gadolinium dye are rare. If one experiences symptoms such as hives, rash, or shortness of breath notify the doctor immediately.
- If any sedation was used during the MRI screening – after some rest one can leave for home. Advised not to drive on your own.
Once the MRI screening is done the treatment can take place effortlessly with the right medications and the doctor will advise what to and what not to do next. The radiology clinic( عيادة الأشعة ) usually advises all the patients about the necessary precautions that are needed and should be taken.
